The other day, an old friend came up to me, put his arms around me and started hugging me.
\u6709\u2f00\u5929\uff0c\u2f00\u4e2a\u2f7c\u670b\u53cb\u6765\u627e\u6211\uff0c\u4ed6\u5f20\u5f00\u53cc\u81c2\u62e5\u62b1\u6211\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who can resist a big hug?
\u8c01\u80fd\u6297\u62d2\u2f00\u4e2a\u2f24\u2f24\u7684\u62e5\u62b1\u5462\uff1f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not me. I immediately put my arms around him.
\u6211\u662f\u4e0d\u80fd\uff0c\u6211\u2f74\u523b\u5f20\u5f00\u53cc\u81c2\u56de\u5e94\u4ed6\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I began to wonder, What makes a hug so much fun? The pressure of the arms? The warmth of the body? The feeling of someone breathing?
\u7136\u540e\u6211\u5f00\u59cb\u601d\u8003\uff0c\u662f\u4ec0\u4e48\u8ba9\u2f00\u4e2a\u62e5\u62b1\u5982\u6b64\u6709\u8da3\uff1f\u662f\u2f3f\u81c2\u7684\u538b\u8feb\u611f\u5417\uff1f\u662f\u2f9d\u4f53\u7684\u6e29\u6696\u5417\uff1f\u8fd8\u662f\u2f08\u547c\u5438\u7684\u611f\u89c9\uff1f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe the feeling of the skin. I touched his face. Nope. Not that either.
\u4e5f\u8bb8\u662f\u808c\u80a4\u7684\u611f\u89c9\uff0c\u6211\u6478\u4e86\u6478\u4ed6\u7684\u8138\u3002\u4e0d\u3002\u4e5f\u4e0d\u662f\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I remembered what Srila Prabhupada told us many years ago. The pleasure comes from the soul. When we hug someone, we hug a soul, though the bodies get in between.
\u7136\u540e\u6211\u60f3\u8d77\u4e86\u65bd\u745e\u62c9\u00b7\u5e15\u5e03\u5e15\u5fb7\u5f88\u591a\u5e74\u524d\u544a\u8bc9\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u3002\u6109\u60a6\u611f\u6765\u2f83\u4e8e\u7075\u9b42\u3002\u5f53\u6211\u4eec\u62e5\u62b1\u2f00\u4e2a\u2f08\u7684\u65f6\u5019\u3002\u6211\u4eec\u62e5\u62b1\u7684\u662f\u7075\u9b42\uff0c\u5c3d\u7ba1\u8eaf\u4f53\u4f1a\u963b\u9694\u6211\u4eec\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No soul? No hug. Who wants to hug a corpse?
\u5982\u679c\u6ca1\u6709\u7075\u9b42\u7684\u8bdd\u5462\uff1f\u90a3\u5c31\u6ca1\u6709\u62e5\u62b1\u4e86\uff0c\u8c01\u613f\u610f\u62e5\u62b1\u2f00\u5177\u2f2b\u4f53\u5462\uff1f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yeah. I went over and turned on the computer, and up came a photo of Marilyn Monroe, once world famous for her beauty. But what man would want to even look at that body today? The soul has been gone for sixty years. Just the thought makes me shudder.
\u662f\u554a\u3002\u6211\u2f9b\u8fc7\u53bb\u6253\u5f00\u7535\u8111\uff0c\u51fa\u73b0\u4e86\u2f00\u5f20\u739b\u4e3d\u83b2\u68a6\u9732\u7684\u7167\u2f5a\uff0c\u5979\u66fe\u4ee5\u7f8e\u8c8c\u2f7d\u95fb\u540d\u4e16\u754c\u3002\u4f46\u73b0\u5728\u6709\u54ea\u4e2a\u7537\u2f08\u4f1a\u60f3\u8981\u770b\u5979\u7684\u2f9d\u4f53\u5462\uff1f\u90a3\u4e2a\u7075\u9b42\u5df2\u7ecf\u2f9b\u4e86 60 \u5e74\u4e86\u3002\u4ec5\u4ec5\u662f\u8fd9\u4e2a\u60f3\u6cd5\u5c31\u8ba9\u6211\u6d51\u2f9d\u53d1\u6296\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Soul in the Tomato
\u897f\u7ea2\u67ff\u4e2d\u7684\u7075\u9b42<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The afternoon was getting on. I walked over to the kitchen where my roommate was cutting some bright red tomatoes. Have you noticed that the internet tells us to buy fruits and vegetables with shiny skins and bright colors?
\u4e0b\u5348\u65f6\u5149\u3002\u6211\u2f9b\u5411\u53a8\u623f\uff0c\u6211\u7684\u5ba4\u53cb\u6b63\u5728\u5207\u9c9c\u7ea2\u7684\u897f\u7ea2\u67ff\u3002\u4f60\u4eec\u6709\u6ca1\u6709\u6ce8\u610f\u5230\uff0c\u2f79\u7edc\u4e0a\u8bf4\u6211\u4eec\u4e70\u852c\u679c\u7684\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u8981\u6311\u9009\u8868\u2f6a\u5149\u6ed1\u2f7d\u4e14\u989c\u2f8a\u5149\u4eae\u7684\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bright red shows a healthy tomato. And good health means life. And life means the soul. So the internet really wants us to buy our fruits and vegetables while the soul still lives in them.
\u9c9c\u8273\u7684\u7ea2\u8868\u660e\u8fd9\u4e2a\u897f\u7ea2\u67ff\u5f88\u5065\u5eb7\uff0c\u2f7d\u597d\u7684\u5065\u5eb7\u610f\u5473\u7740\u2f63\u547d\u2f12\uff0c\u2f7d\u2f63\u547d\u2f12\u610f\u5473\u7740\u7075\u9b42\u3002\u6240\u4ee5\u2f79\u4e0a\u5b9e\u9645\u4e0a\u7684\u610f\u601d\u662f\uff0c\u4e70\u852c\u83dc\u548c\u2f54\u679c\u7684\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u6311\u7075\u9b42\u8fd8\u5728\u2fa5\u2faf\u7684\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I went back to the internet. I saw an article denouncing the falsity of the law of karma. How can karma exist? said the article. Don\u2019t we all know that bad things happen to good people?
\u6211\u4eec\u518d\u56de\u5230\u4e92\u8054\u2f79\u4e0a\uff0c\u6211\u770b\u5230\u2f00\u7bc7\u8c34\u8d23\u56e0\u679c\u5b9a\u5f8b\uff08karma \u4e1a\u62a5\uff09\u7684\u2f42\u7ae0\u3002\u2f42\u7ae0\u8bf4\uff0c\u56e0\u679c\u5b9a\u5f8b\u600e\u4e48\u53ef\u80fd\u5b58\u5728\u5462\uff1f\u6211\u4eec\u8c01\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u597d\u2f08\u6ca1\u597d\u62a5\uff1f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh? Want to deny the law of karma, do you? Well it would help if you knew something about it. What does the law of karma actually say?
\u54e6\uff1f\u770b\u6765\u4f60\u662f\u60f3\u5426\u8ba4\u56e0\u679c\u5b9a\u5f8b\u7684\u5b58\u5728\u662f\u5417\uff1f\u597d\u5427\uff0c\u5176\u5b9e\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u5bf9\u6b64\u6709\u6240\u4e86\u89e3\uff0c\u90a3\u4f1a\u5f88\u6709\u5e2e\u52a9\u3002\u90a3\u4e48\u56e0\u679c\u5b9a\u5f8b\u5b9e\u9645\u4e0a\u8bf4\u7684\u662f\u4ec0\u4e48\u5462\uff1f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stealing an Old Lady\u2019s Purse
\u5077\u2f7c\u592a\u592a\u7684\u94b1\u5305<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Vedas tell us that karma follows you from one life to the next. So maybe you take care of the sick in this life, but you break your leg.
\u97e6\u8fbe\u2f42\u732e\u544a\u8bc9\u6211\u4eec\uff0c\u4e1a\u62a5\u8ddf\u968f\u7740\u6211\u4eec\u4ece\u2f00\u4e2a\u2f63\u547d\u5230\u53e6\u2f00\u4e2a\u2f63\u547d\u3002\u6240\u4ee5\u4e5f\u8bb8\u4f60\u8fd9\u8f88\u2f26\u7167\u987e\u75c5\u2f08\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u4f60\u7684\u817f\u5374\u53d7\u4f24\u4e86\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why? Because you stole the purse from an old lady and knocked her down in the life before.
\u4e3a\u4ec0\u4e48\u8fd9\u6837\uff1f\u56e0\u4e3a\u4f60\u524d\u4e16\u5077\u4e86\u2f00\u4e2a\u2f7c\u592a\u592a\u7684\u94b1\u5305\uff0c\u5e76\u4e14\u628a\u5979\u6253\u5012\u5728\u5730\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Generally, though, karma brings both good luck and bad. So the creep down the road who steals from the charity collection box inherits a big house from his great aunt Myrtle.
\u4e0d\u8fc7\u2f00\u822c\u6765\u8bf4\uff0c\u4e1a\u62a5\u65e2\u6709\u597d\u7684\u2f00\u2faf\u4e5f\u6709\u4e0d\u597d\u7684\u2f00\u2faf\u3002\u6240\u4ee5\u6cbf\u7740\u9a6c\u8def\u5077\u5077\u6478\u6478\u7684\u5077\u4e86\u52df\u6350\u7bb1\u7684\u2f08\uff0c\u4ece\u4ed6\u59e8\u59e5\u59e5\u9ed8\u7279\u5c14\u90a3\u2fa5\u7ee7\u627f\u4e86\u2f00\u680b\u2f24\u623f\u2f26\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Feels good to know how the universe works,doesn\u2019t it?
\u4e86\u89e3\u5b87\u5b99\u7684\u8fd0\u4f5c\u2f45\u5f0f\u611f\u89c9\u5f88\u597d\uff0c\u4e0d\u662f\u5417\uff1f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fragrance of Wet Mud
\u6e7f\u6ce5\u7684\u2fb9\u2f53\uff1f<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Then I found an article about people working to save the mangrove forests. Mangrove trees grow near water, and I remembered gardening when I was younger and digging my hands into wet mud. It feels soothing on my skin, and the fragrance drives away my worries.
\u7136\u540e\u6211\u53d1\u73b0\u4e86\u2f00\u7bc7\u2f08\u4eec\u52aa\u2f12\u62ef\u6551\u7ea2\u6811\u6797\u7684\u2f42\u7ae0\u3002\u7ea2\u6811\u6797\u2f63\u957f\u5728\u2f54\u8fb9\uff0c\u6211\u8bb0\u5f97\u5e74\u8f7b\u7684\u65f6\u5019\u505a\u56ed\u827a\uff0c\u628a\u2f3f\u6316\u8fdb\u6e7f\u7684\u6ce5\u2f1f\u2fa5\uff0c\u6ce5\u2f1f\u8212\u7f13\u7684\u611f\u89c9\u548c\u82ac\u82b3\u7684\u2fb9\u2f53\u9a71\u6563\u4e86\u6211\u7684\u70e6\u607c\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, in the Bhagavad-Gita, Lord Krishna says, \u201cI am the original fragrance of the earth.\u201d (7.9)
\u5b9e\u9645\u4e0a\uff0c\u5728\u300a\u535a\u4f3d\u68b5\u6b4c\u300b\u4e2d\uff0c\u4e3b\u594e\u5e08\u90a3\u8bf4\u201c\u6211\u662f\u2f1f\u5730\u6700\u539f\u521d\u7684\u82b3\u2fb9\u3002\u201d\uff087.9\uff09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you ever wondered where the flowers get their sweet smell? I\u2019ll tell you. They get it from the earth. Where else could it come from?
\u4f60\u6709\u6ca1\u6709\u60f3\u8fc7\u9c9c\u82b1\u7684\u2fb9\u2f53\u662f\u4ece\u54ea\u2fa5\u6765\u7684\uff1f\u6211\u6765\u544a\u8bc9\u4f60\uff0c\u5b83\u4eec\u4ece\u2f1f\u5730\u4e2d\u5f97\u5230\u3002\u8fd8\u80fd\u4ece\u54ea\u2fa5\u6765\uff1f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Secret about the Earth
\u5173\u4e8e\u5730\u7403\u7684\u79d8\u5bc6<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

And flowers are the essence of perfume. So the next time you expand your lungs to let in the jasmine incense, give a thought to Krishna, the original fragrance of the earth.
\u2f7d\u82b1\u662f\u2fb9\u2f54\u7684\u7cbe\u534e\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u4e0b\u6b21\u5f53\u4f60\u6df1\u5438\u2f00\u2f1c\u2f53\uff0c\u8ba9\u8309\u8389\u82b1\u2fb9\u8fdb\u2f0a\u4f60\u7684\u80ba\u90e8\u65f6\uff0c\u60f3\u60f3\u594e\u5e08\u90a3\uff0c\u2f24\u5730\u539f\u59cb\u7684\u82ac\u82b3\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Want to know a secret about the earth too? About why we say Mother Earth?
\u8fd8\u60f3\u8981\u77e5\u9053\u2f00\u4e2a\u5173\u4e8e\u5730\u7403\u7684\u79d8\u5bc6\u5417\uff1f\u4e3a\u4ec0\u4e48\u6211\u4eec\u8bf4\u201c\u5730\u7403\u6bcd\u4eb2\u201d\uff1f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The earth also has a soul. The Vedas call her Bhumi Devi (\u201cGoddess Bhumi\u201d). Mother Earth is a great devotee of Krishna. And as one of the mothers of humanity, she provides the grains, vegetables, and fruit that nourish us.
\u5730\u7403\u4e5f\u6709\u7075\u9b42\uff0c\u97e6\u8fbe\u2f42\u732e\u79f0\u5979\u4e3a Bhumi Devi \uff08Bhumi \u2f25\u795e\uff09\u3002\u201c\u5730\u7403\u6bcd\u4eb2\u201d\u662f\u594e\u5e08\u90a3\u7684\u2f00\u4e2a\u4f1f\u2f24\u7684\u5949\u732e\u8005\uff0c\u4f5c\u4e3a\u2f08\u7c7b\u7684\u6bcd\u4eb2\u4e4b\u2f00\uff0c\u5979\u63d0\u4f9b\u4e86\u6ecb\u517b\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u2f95\u7269\u3001\u852c\u83dc\u548c\u2f54\u679c\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t believe me? I didn\u2019t make it up. Honest. You can read it in the Srimad Bhagavatam.
\u4e0d\u76f8\u4fe1\u6211\u8bf4\u7684\uff1f\u8fd9\u4e0d\u662f\u6211\u7f16\u7684\u3002\u771f\u7684\u3002\u4f60\u53ef\u4ee5\u5728\u300a\u5723\u5178\u535a\u4f3d\u2f61\u8c2d\u300b\u4e2d\u8bfb\u5230\u8fd9\u4e9b\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So the next time you see a field of wheat remember that Goddess Bhumi provides this for her children.

Don\u2019t Step on Your Mother
\u4e0d\u8981\u8e29\u8e0f\u4f60\u7684\u6bcd\u4eb2<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many sages and yogis say a prayer to the earth as they get up in the morning. \u201cPlease excuse me, my dear mother,\u201d they pray. \u201cPlease forgive me. I am about to put my feet on you.\u201d
\u8bb8\u591a\u5723\u2f08\u548c\u745c\u4f3d\u5e08\u5728\u65e9\u6668\u8d77\u5e8a\u65f6\u5411\u2f24\u5730\u7948\u7977\uff1a\u201c\u8bf7\u539f\u8c05\u6211\uff0c\u6211\u4eb2\u7231\u7684\u6bcd\u4eb2\uff0c\u201d\u4ed6\u4eec\u7948\u7977\u8bf4\u3002\u201c\u8bf7\u539f\u8c05\u6211\uff0c\u6211\u8981\u8e29\u5728\u4f60\u2f9d\u4e0a\u4e86\u3002\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I looked at the imaginary mud in my hands. \u201cI am touching my mother the earth,\u201d I thought.
\u6211\u770b\u7740\u2f3f\u4e2d\u5047\u60f3\u7684\u6ce5\u2f1f\u3002\u201c\u6211\u6b63\u5728\u89e6\u6478\u6211\u7684\u5730\u7403\u6bcd\u4eb2\uff0c\u201d\u6211\u60f3\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then I saw a little green bug running down my hand into the mud below. My mind went back to 1970 to our center in Los Angeles. I was sitting with the others in the lecture hall as sunlight poured in through the windows.
\u7136\u540e\u6211\u770b\u5230\u2f00\u4e2a\u7eff\u2f8a\u7684\u2f29\u2f8d\u2f26\u4ece\u6211\u7684\u2f3f\u4e2d\u8fdb\u5230\u6ce5\u2f1f\u2fa5\u3002\u6211\u7684\u601d\u7eea\u4e5f\u56de\u5230\u4e86 1970 \u5e74\uff0c\u6211\u4eec\u5728\u6d1b\u6749\u77f6\u7684\u4e2d\u2f3c\uff0c\u6211\u548c\u5176\u4ed6\u2f08\u5750\u5728\u6f14\u8bb2\u5385\u2fa5\uff0c\u9633\u5149\u900f\u8fc7\u7a97\u6237\u7167\u8fdb\u6765\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We listened, hanging on to every word as Prabhupada spoke.
\u6211\u4eec\u503e\u542c\u7740\uff0c\u7d27\u7d27\u7684\u6293\u4f4f\u5e15\u5e03\u5e15\u5fb7\u7684\u6bcf\u4e2a\u5b57\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you try to catch a little bug,\u201d said Prabhupada, \u201che will run away because he has free will. This free will is the perfection of God\u2019s creation.\u201d
\u201c\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u8bd5\u7740\u6293\u4f4f\u2f00\u4e2a\u2f29\u2f8d\u2f26\uff0c\u201d\u5e15\u5e03\u5e15\u5fb7\u8bf4\uff0c\u201c\u4ed6\u4f1a\u9003\u8dd1\uff0c\u56e0\u4e3a\u5b83\u6709\u2f83\u7531\u610f\u5fd7\uff0c\u8fd9\u79cd\u2f83\u7531\u610f\u5fd7\u662f\u4e0a\u5e1d\u521b\u9020\u7684\u6700\u5b8c\u7f8e\u7684\u90e8\u5206\u3002\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My mind came back to the present. I ambled over to the dining nook where my hugger friend was chomping down on bright red tomato slices wallowing in sesame oil.
\u6211\u7684\u601d\u7eea\u56de\u5230\u73b0\u5728\u3002\u6211\u6162\u541e\u541e\u7684\u2f9b\u5230\u9910\u5385\u7684\u2f93\u843d\uff0c\u62e5\u62b1\u6211\u7684\u90a3\u4e2a\u670b\u53cb\u6b63\u5728\u72fc\u541e\u864e\u54bd\u7684\u5403\u7740\u6ce1\u5728\u2fb9\u6cb9\u2fa5\u7684\u9c9c\u7ea2\u7684\u897f\u7ea2\u67ff\u2f5a\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI learned something about the soul today,\u201d I thought. \u201cThank you, Krishna.\u201d
